Robert A. M. Stern (born May 23, 1939) is an American architect, professor, and academic author based in New York City and New Haven. He received his bachelor’s degree from Columbia University in 1960 and his master’s degree in architecture from Yale University in 1965. Stern cites Vincent Scully and Philip Johnson as early mentors and influencers. He is currently Dean of the Yale School of Architecture and also runs his own architectural firm, Robert A.M. Stern Architects (also known as RAMSA).
Stern is representative of New He Urbanism and New His Classical His architecture, with particular emphasis on urban context and continuity of tradition. He may have been the first architect to use the term “postmodern”, but more recently he has used the phrase “modern traditionalist” to describe his work. In 2011, Stern was awarded the prestigious Dolly House Architecture Award for his achievements in contemporary classical architecture. His major work includes the new classic 15 Central Park West in New York City and the more recent modern Comcast Center skyscraper in Philadelphia.
