Piano was born in 1937 in Genoa, Italy, into a family of builders. He trained at the Politecnico di Milano and later taught. In 1964 he graduated from college and began working with experimental lightweight structures and simple shelters. He worked in the Philadelphia offices of legendary architect Louis Kahn from 1965 to 1970, then at Z.S. Makowski in London. He then formed an architectural firm called Piano & Rogers with Richard Rodgers, with whom he worked from 1971 until 1977. Here they designed their most famous project, the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris.
In 1981, Piano founded the Renzo Piano Building Workshop, which today employs 150 people and has offices in Paris, Genoa and New York City. The piano became known for his museum commissions, including the Morgan Library in New York City and his NEMO Science Museum in Amsterdam. Some of Piano’s most notable projects have recently been completed. These include skyscrapers such as the New York Times Building in Midtown Manhattan and The Shard in London, the tallest skyscraper in Europe, which opened on July 6, 2012. The piano was awarded the Royal Gold Medal (1989). Premium Imperiale (1995). Pritzker Prize (1998); AIA Gold Medal (2008). In August 2013, he was appointed Senator for Life by the President of the Italian Republic for “Outstanding Cultural Achievement”.
