Zumthor was born in Basel on 26 April 1943, the son of a carpenter. In 1958 he apprenticed as a carpenter and from 1963 studied at the School of Applied Arts in his home town. In 1966 Zumthor studied industrial design and architecture at the Pratt Institute in New York as an exchange student. And in 1968 he became a conservation architect at the Monument Conservation Office in Graubünden. This work on a historical restoration project gave him a better understanding of the construction and the quality of various rustic building materials. Zumthor established his own office in 1979. He has taught at the Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles, Technical University of Munich, Tulane University, and the Harvard Graduate School of Design. As his practice developed, Zumthor was able to incorporate his knowledge of materials into modernist structures and details. His buildings explore the tactile and sensory nature of spaces and materials while maintaining a minimalist feel.
His most famous project is the Kunsthaus his Bregenz, a shimmering glass and concrete cube overlooking Lake Constance in Austria. Spongy hot springs in Wals, Switzerland. His Swiss Pavilion at Expo 2000 in Hannover is an all-wood construction that will be recycled after the event. Columba Parish Museum, Cologne (2007). and his brother Klausfield Band on a farm near Wachendorf. Zumthor currently works in a small studio with about 30 employees in Haldenstein near Chur, Switzerland. His dedication earned him the 2009 Pritzker Prize and his 2013 RIBA Royal Gold Medal.
