Kuma was born in Yokohama in 1954. After graduating from the Department of Architecture at the University of Tokyo in 1979, he worked for Nihon Sekkei and Toda Corporation. He then moved to New York from 1985 to 1986, where he continued his studies as a visiting fellow at Columbia University. In 1987 he established “Space Design Studio” and in 1990 established his own office “Kengo Kuma & Associates”. He has taught at Columbia University, University of Illinois at Urbana, Champaign, and Keio University. in architecture. Mr. Kuma is currently a professor at the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Architecture, where he conducts various research projects related to architecture, cities, and design in his own laboratory, the Kuma Laboratory.
Kuma’s stated goal is to revive Japanese architectural traditions and reinterpret these traditions for his 21st century. 1997 Architectural Institute of Japan Award, 2009 French Order of Arts and Letters Officier. His seminal 2008 text Anti-Object: The Dissolution and Disintegration of Architecture calls for an architecture of relationships that respect rather than dominate its environment. The Kuma project has a strong interest in manipulating light with nature through materiality. His major projects include the Suntory Museum of Art in Tokyo, the Bamboo Wall House in China, the Japanese headquarters of the LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy) Group, the Besançon Art Center in France and one of the largest spas in the Caribbean for Mandarin.
