History of the Gothic style

It was during the reconstruction of the Church of Saint-Denis in France that Gothic architecture was born in the Middle Ages, between 1137 and 1144. In fact, this famous French church can be considered the first building built with Gothic architecture. This style of architecture soon opened its way from France to other European countries, including the United Kingdom.

Gothic style was considered a religious style; Because it was often used to build churches. However, in this period, when Gothic architecture was famous, in addition to churches, palaces, universities and castles were built in this style, which are still popular. Gothic style flourished between the 12th and 16th centuries. Before that there was Romanesque architecture and then Renaissance architecture.

Characteristics of Gothic architectural style

Although the Gothic style differs slightly depending on the geographical location, age and type of building (church, palace or university); But they are similar in 5 main elements, which make them easily identifiable and distinguish them from other architectural styles.

Large windows with stained glass

While having stained glass windows is common in most churches, it is an important feature of the Gothic style of architecture, which, along with the large windows and sharp arches, is good.
